One day symposium
23 February 1996
MATHEMATICAL SCIENCES:
Adding to Australia
Mathematical Sciences: Adding to Australia is the title of the
report of the recently completed "Strategic Review of Mathematical
Sciences Research and Advanced Mathematical Services in Australia".
I t was launched in Canberra by the President of the Australian
Academy of Science, Sir Gustav Nossal, on January 23.
On February 23, the Australian Mathematical Sciences Council and the
National Committee for Mathematics are holding a National Symposium
at the University of New South Wales to promote the Review and the
importance of the mathematical sciences to Australian life.
Brochures have been distributed widely and we hope you have seen
one.
As you will see from the program appended below (and attached as a
WORD document, if you want a formatted copy and cannot read WORD
documents contact me and I will send a copy), we have an outstandin g
slate of speakers. We think we have achieved our aim of making the
Symposium of interest to decision makers in industry and government,
industrial users of mathematical sciences, research collabora tors,
mathematical scientists, mathematics educators, and the media.
But we need your support. We need as many people as possible to
register to show that the advanced mathematical sciences are
important and that the Review is important. We would hope that
teachers, m athematics educators and researchers would find the day
both stimulating and rewarding.
Please note that, to assist full-time research students attend,
there will be a reduced registration of $60 provided the
registration is endorsed by the supervisor. This information was not
included on the original brochure.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION AND PROGRAM DETAILS
The mathematical sciences are among the most powerful and beautiful
creations of the mind. This National Symposium celebrates the
contribution of the mathematical sciences to Australia.
Mathematical Sciences: Adding to Australia is the title of the
report of the recently completed "Strategic Review of Mathematical
Sciences Research and Advanced Mathematical Services in Australia".
The Review was completed by a Working Party appointed by the
National Committee for Mathematics and chaired by Professor A J van
der Poorten. Major sponsors were the Australian Research Council,
man y university mathematical sciences departments, and CSIRO.
The Review showed the extraordinary extent to which mathematical
sciences penetrate other disciplines and clearly demonstrated the
essential role played in the economic competitiveness of the nation.
A few of the many applications cited in the review were
manufacturing, biometrics, services and defence. The Review made 20
recommendations to develop the profession and enhance its
effectiveness to the nation.
PROGRAM
The program contains a slate of outstanding speakers drawn from
government, the universities and private industry. In particular,
the speakers will demonstrate the importance of advanced mathematica
l sciences in industry and their role in interdisciplinary research.
The Symposium will be of use and interest to decision makers in
industry and government, industrial users of mathematical science s,
research collaborators, mathematical scientists, mathematics
educators, and the media.
Special Rate Full-time students may register for $60. The supervisor
should endorse the registration form. Registration includes all
published material, morning and afternoon teas and lunch.
Dinner
An informal dinner will be arranged at an appropriate venue
for those in Sydney of the Thursday night who would like to meet
some of the speakers, participants and organising committee.
Details will be sent to all those registering.

The Australian Mathematical Sciences Council was formed in 1989 to
foster collaboration between the professional societies
representing the various aspects of the mathematical sciences. The
overall objective of the Council is to project to both the community
at large, and to government, the vital role which the mathematical
sciences play in the life of the nation. Member societies are
Australi an Mathematical Society, Mathematics Education Research
Group of Australasia, Mathematics Education Lecturers' Association
and Statistical Society of Australia. Observing societies are
Australia Soci ety for Operations Research and Bridging Mathematics
Network.
The National Committee for Mathematics is a committee of the
Australian Academy of Science, whose role is to foster the
mathematical sciences in Australia, and to further Australia's links
with mathe matical scientists overseas through its links with the
International Council of Scientific Unions.
