WILKINSON FELLOWSHIP IN SCIENTIFIC COMPUTING

Mathematics and Computer Science Division
Argonne National Laboratory

The Mathematics and Computer Science Division of Argonne National Laboratory invites outstanding candidates to apply for the J. H. Wilkinson Fellowship in Scientific Computing. The appointment is for one year and may be renewed for a second year.

This fellowship was created in memory of Dr. James Hardy Wilkinson, F.R.S., who had a close association with the Mathematics and Computer Science Division as a consultant and guiding spirit for the EISPACK and LINPACK projects. The Wilkinson Fellowship is intended to encourage young scientists actively engaged in state-of-the-art research in scientific computing. Candidates must have received their Ph.D. not more than three years prior to the beginning of the appointment. The benefits of the appointment include a highly competitive salary, moving expenses, and a generous professional travel allowance.

The appointment will be in the Mathematics and Computer Science Division, which has strong programs in scientific computing, software tools, and computational mathematics. Of special interest are numerical methods and software for linear algebra, optimization, unstructured mesh computations, computational differentiation, software tools for parallel computing; and state-of-the-art numerical methods for computational science problems.

The Mathematics and Computer Science Division has an outstanding computational environment that includes high-performance scientific workstations, a scientific visualization laboratory, a 128-node IBM SP, a multimedia laboratory, and a virtual environment research facility.

For more information concerning the Mathematics and Computer Science Division and its facilities, see http://www.mcs.anl.gov. Argonne is located in the southwestern Chicago suburbs, offering the advantages of affordable housing, good schools, and easy access to the cultural attractions of the city.

Resumes should be addressed to Walter McFall, Box mcs-wilkinson, Employment and Placement, Argonne National Laboratory, 9700 S. Cass Avenue, Argonne, IL 60439, and must include a statement of research goals, and the names and addresses of three references. The closing date for applications is January 24, 1997. The applications will be reviewed by a selection committee and a candidate announced in April 1997. Further inquiries can be made by sending e-mail to griffin@mcs.anl.gov.

Argonne is an affirmative action/equal opportunity employer.

Subject: AIOR activities in 1996
To: P.Lochert@maths.monash.edu.au

As you will have seen from previous Email messages, The Australian Institute for Operations Research is organising 3 activities in November and December:

Nov 15: Interior Point Methods Workshop - Steve Wright
Nov 27-29: Forecasting Short Course
Dec 6: Nemhauser workshop

We are now looking ahead to next year and starting to consider potential activities. We have a number of ideas ourselves but we would also welcome suggestions from members (and others) - so what courses / workshops would you like us to organise for 1996? Now is your chance to influence us.

The UK OR Society run a 1-day instruction programme entitled "Spreadsheet Modelling" which covers 4 topics:

  1. Forecasting with Excel
  2. Linear programming with Excel
  3. Multiple regression with Excel
  4. Analysis of variance with Excel

We could provide such a course here in Melbourne provided there is sufficient interest and provided we have people willing to present it. Please let me know if you would be interested in attending such a programme, or alternatively which of these topics you would be willing to present.

There would be a cost of attending such a course and there would be a fee for the presenter(s).
