About the Speaker

This is what Steve tells us about himself in his official WWW home page at

http://www.mcs.anl.gov/people/wright/index.html

'' I am a Computer Scientist in the MCS Division and Director of the Optimization Technology Center (OTC), a joint venture of Argonne and Northwestern University.

I am currently involved in the development of the OTC's Network-enabled Optimization System (NEOS), which will combine high-quality optimization software and user interfaces with the features of the Net to change and expand the ways in which optimization technology is used.

My research interests include issues arising in the development of NEOS; interior-point methods for linear programming, complementarity problems, and nonlinear problems; nonlinear optimization; numerical linear algebra; and parallel algorithms for ODE-based optimization problems"

Unofficially we can tell you that Steve is an expatriate Aussie living near Chicago, USA. His very short resume reads as follows:

PhD in Numerical Analysis, University of Queensland (1984); Postdoctoral Associate (85-6), then Visiting Assistant Professor, University of Arizona; Assistant Professor then Associate Professor, North Carolina, State University (86-8); Research Associate then Computer Scientist, Argonne National Lab (88-), Director, Optimization Technology Centre, Argonne National Lab and Northwestern University (95-).

Interests:
Interior Point Methods, The National Energy Modeling System project, Algorithms for Nonlinear Optimization, Optimization Problems involving Ordinary Differential Equations, Parallel Computation.

Publications:
Apart from numerous papers published in international refereed journals, Steve's has coauthored a book, "Optimization Software Guide'', with J More' (Argonne), published in 1993 by SIAM. Steve is currently completing two other books, a graduate text on interior point methods and a text book on nonlinear programming, the latter with J Nocedal (Northwestern).

Editorial Activities:
Associate editor for SIAM Journal on Optimization, Mathematics of Computation and Optimization Methods and Software.
